Lights
I've said it before, building a house requires making a million decisions. And as a Type A personality, I love it (although the tradies may prefer someone less specific about small details). Anyway, yesterday was all about electrical decisions so I met the electrician on site with my tape measure in hand and the children trailing behind. We went through every room of the house and marked out the powerpoints, the light fittings and the exhaust fans.
One issue you should know about if you're considering renovating or building is that traditional old light bulbs have hit the dust. They're forbidden these days - like full fat milk, carbs and leaving children in the car for two minutes while you buy the milk. It's all about LEDs, fluoros and energy efficiency. I'm all for energy efficiency but is there a nice warm light option rather than the harsh, cold fluoro? If there is, let me know because as anyone who's been in a fitting room knows, fluoro's add at least 10 years to your face. And nobody wants that in their own home.
Or in their vintage lights like both of these vintage lights I bought on e-bay. I hope you're still with me, because there's another big issue to discuss. Gas hot water or solar? What are your views? I haven't kept up with the changes to the rebates so I'd like your view.
About Spots and Stripes
When I began my third renovation, I swapped the corporate ladder for the rusty paint ladder and began my website and blog, Spots and Stripes, which chronicles the restoration of our 'Queenslander' in Brisbane. I'm also an interior editor helping clients to create a home which is not modern, nor traditional, rather it's interesting. For a home that is unlike any other, I can assist with the selection of lights, tiles, mirrors, wallpaper, paint, furniture and fabric.

Hi Amber - I'm yet to finalise our lighting plan, but we will be using a selection of pendants, wall lights and standard batten holders. I thought the halogen bulbs ( which are the replacement to the incandescent bulbs) were OK. They look exactly the same and you can specify "warm colour lamps only."
As for the hot water, I've used both (in previously houses) they are equally fine. At this stage I'm actually planning on using the Bosch instantaneous gas hot water heater system (only because the panels would be an eye-sore on our existing house.
We have gas hot water. One of the small heat as you use it units and I love it. The water is always HOT and never runs cold. Although having said that it does have an electric ignition rather than an always burning pilot light which means when the power goes out, no ignition and therefore cold water.
Where was I when you snagged those lights! Nice buying!
Sounds like gas hot water is the pick. Thanks for the advice ladies. Amber
Gas hot water with a solar booster.
