The Block - Kitchen Reveal
Kitchen week on The Block was really good as there were some great ideas on display. Dale and Sophie's kitchen was my favourite (pictures 1-4) as they mashed up traditional elements with a modern base. The industrial pendant lights in pale blue were gorgeous (photo above).
The pressed metal splashback was the best looking splashback I've seen in a long time.
They also chose fabulous stools. Have you tried to buy great stools lately? They're almost impossible to find.
Dand and Dani delivered a function kitchen that had nice pendant lights. The judges didn't like the sink. John McGrath said it should have been full under-mount sink. I agree with him. What was your favourite kitchen?

The highlight of Sophie's kitchen for me was the choice of oven. They went with the Ilve Nostalgie. It's the same as the one I picked for our renovation except ours is black. Sophie's is a lovely clotted cream colour. These ovens are really gorgeous to look at as they have retro knobs and fittings. Although Sophie and Dale won the room on the judges scores, the brothers used their bonus points to win the night (photo below).
Andrew and Mike's kitchen was in contrast to Sophie and Dale's. It was a modern kitchen with a mirrored splashback. I liked the timber roof (photo above). It added warmth to an otherwise, streamlined space.
Brad and Lara's kitchen was relaxed and comfortable. Their standout feature was a map of South Melbourne on the glass front of the island. It was a great idea and looked great.

About Spots and Stripes
When I began my third renovation, I swapped the corporate ladder for the rusty paint ladder and began my website and blog, Spots and Stripes, which chronicles the restoration of our 'Queenslander' in Brisbane. I'm also an interior editor helping clients to create a home which is not modern, nor traditional, rather it's interesting. For a home that is unlike any other, I can assist with the selection of lights, tiles, mirrors, wallpaper, paint, furniture and fabric.

Do you think Andrew and Mike used toughened glass for the mirror splashback? I have heard toughened mirror has a smoky finish and theirs doesn't look smoky at all? (I'm interested because I want one).
Totally agree with you on the stools, we haven't found any we like either. I liked Dale and Sophies too, except for the kitchenaid which I thought was the wrong colour for the space ( even though it's the one that I want). I have been contemplating a pressed metal splashback for the laundry, good to see one in a finished space.
I thought the boys space had great potential but I would have liked an island instead of the the table and then at one end a lower area attached as an eating area/nook.
Brad and Lara had some good ideas but it looked bitty and cluttered. Dan and Dani was a bit catalogue boring for my liking and I wasn't fussed on those pendants in the kitchen but I loved them in the bathroom. Lots of good ideas though! melx
Mel I agree with you about the boys kitchen - looks great but I would prefer the utility of an island. I love Sophie and Dale's kitchen, it looks inviting and "real" and that splashback is fabulous. But they are all lovely spaces, thanks for this post Amber Fx
I'm always talking about kitchens with my girlfriends, what works, what doesn't, what's new. I suppose it's because we spend a lot of life in them. One friend has a mirrored splashback and it's like a normal mirror, no smoky finish. Although, it does require daily cleaning. I agree with both of you about the Island in the kitchen - definitely required!
Dale & Sophie's was my fave too!
It just had such a feel about it as well as a great look......and that's hard to find......
